Order of Arithmetic Operations

To solve arithmetic there are certain rules to follow when arithmetic problems involve many operations. The rules are

  • Rule 1: Work within the brackets first.
    For example, $7+(2\times 3) 7 + 6 = 13$.
    Note if more than one pair of brackets, then solve the innermost bracket first. For example, $[6\times (4+5)] = 6\times 9 = 54$.
  • Rule 2: Do division and multiplication before addition or subtraction, working from left to right. If exponents of power are involved, solve it before multiplication or division.
    For example, $15\times 2^2 + 4^2 \times 3 = 15\times 8 + 16\times 3 = 168$

The above rules can be stated together in the following way:

Do Multiplication or division before addition or subtraction working from left to right. When brackets are involved, simplify the expression within the brackets first.

The order of arithmetic operations can be easily remembered from the word BEDMAS, where
B=Brackets
E=Exponent
D=Division
M=Multiplication
A=Addition
S=Subtractdion

Fraction and Decimals

The numbers $\frac{3}{4}$ is a fraction. In a fraction $\frac{a}{b}$, $a$ is called the numerator and $b$ is called the denominator. Numbers like 855.75 are said to be written in the decimal form and we may simply refer to them as decimals.
